Top Roofing Materials to Choose When You Need a Change

As a homeowner, you do your best to keep everything in good condition and looking great. Despite your best efforts, portions of your home are going to wear out and eventually fail. Roof replacement can be a daunting task, but it’s important that you don’t put it off and that you choose effective materials. Consider your options and go with a style that suits your needs best.

Asphalt

This is one of the most common choices you’ll see on roofs everywhere. Asphalt shingles won’t cost you as much as other options, and they’re also easier to install than many of their counterparts. They should last you about 20 years, though this is shorter than other materials. Asphalt shingles don’t match up to others in terms of quality and insulation, either.

Metal

A metal roof is extremely durable. If you were to do your roof replacement with this material, you shouldn’t have to replace it again for at least 50 years. Metal roofs aren’t as aesthetically pleasing, however. They also cost more than asphalt.

Slate

If you’re looking for an attractive style, slate is an excellent way to go. You can select any of several colors to enhance the look of your entire home. Slate shingles will also resist fire and are effective in standing up to the elements. On the downside, it can very expensive to install and will likely require a professional to handle the work.

Wood

Wood shingles have been around for centuries, and you’ll still see them today. This style offers a rustic charm that works well on cabins, cottages and other quaint homes. Installation isn’t as difficult as other materials. If you live in an area where it rains a lot, this might not be the best option.

Roof replacement is inevitable at some point. Be prepared to pick one of these styles based on your own preferences.
